A man accused of sexually assaulting a child in 2011 was shot after a gun allegedly was pulled on deputies who were attempting to arrest him on the Northeast Side.
Ricky Fay Stokes, 63, was charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and aggravated assault against a public servant. His bail was set at $175,000.
An indictment states Stokes is accused of inappropriately touching a girl who was younger than 14 in March 2011.
Two deputies with the fugitive apprehension unit who were looking for the suspect approached a home in the 12900 block of Parton Lane about 7 p.m. Wednesday.
One deputy went to the front door while a second deputy went to the garage and looked inside through a window, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said.
The second deputy pulled up a photo of the suspect on his cellphone when he saw a man stepping into the garage. The deputy then asked the man if he was the same person.
“At some point, the garage door was opened,” Salazar said. “It’s unclear at this time if the deputy himself opened it or the suspect did.”
The man was wearing a heavy, military-style coat with his hands in his pockets, deputies said.
Salazar said the man indicated he had a gun and told the deputies “he was not going to go back, and that they were just going to have to do what they had to do.”
One deputy tried deploying a stun gun on the man, but the attempt failed because of the heavy coat jacket, Salazar said.
Investigators allege the man then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the deputies.
One of the deputies quickly fired two shots, striking the suspect in his hip, the sheriff said.
“My understanding is that even after being shot, he continued to try to raise that weapon,” Salazar said. “I’ve just got to tell you, from what I understand at this point, those deputies showed a massive amount of restraint in what they did.”
The suspect was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center and is expected to recover, deputies said. He will be booked into Bexar County Jail when he is released from the hospital.
Neither of the two deputies was injured, officials said.
The deputy who fired the shot has been with Sheriff’s Office for more than 20 years, Salazar said. He will be placed on administrative leave for a couple of days before returning to administrative duty, officials said. He also will seen by a psychologist as part of normal procedures.
The other deputy is a 12-year Sheriff’s Office veteran.
